    Labor Market Volatility

Labor market conditions have been a roller-coaster over the past couple years, hitting record high unemployment rates followed by record lows in many areas over a tumultuous 24 months. This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the Washington and Whatcom County labor markets, with emphasis on labor force and unemployment rates and industry employment trends.

    Presented by: Anneliese Vance-Sherman

Anneliese is a regional labor economist with the Washington State Employment Security Department, a position she has held since February 2010. Her region includes King, Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties. Anneliese works closely with economic and workforce development partners, media, businesses and others throughout the North and Central Puget Sound region and statewide, providing local labor market intelligence to help inform strategic decision-making.

In addition to her work with the state, Anneliese serves on several boards and advisory groups including the Pacific Northwest Regional Economic Conference, the Skagit County Population Health Trust, the Border Policy Research Institute at Western Washington University, and several colleges and school districts throughout the region. Prior to state service, Anneliese was a visiting fellow at the Border Policy Research Institute and instructor at the College of Business and Economics at Western Washington University.

Anneliese has a Ph.D. in economic geography and a master’s degree in economics both from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
