    Transgender in the Workplace

The concepts of sex, gender, and transgender will be briefly reviewed. The rights of transgender employees and some of the obstacles they may face in the workplace will be discussed. Michele will tell her story of transitioning as a Fire Captain. We will offer advice for respectful treatment of transgender workers and best practices for handling transgender issues in the workplace. There will be time for Q&A.

Presented by:  Janis Walworth and Michele Kammerer, Center for Gender Sanity

As Director of the Center for Gender Sanity, Janis has consulted with employers on transgender issues in the workplace; conducted trainings for managers, HR and EAP groups, and employees; and worked with transgender people to help them make a smooth transition on the job. Janis is author of Transsexual Workers: An Employer's Guide and Working with a Transsexual: A Guide for Coworkers.

Michele had a 33-year career as a firefighter and captain with the Los Angeles Fire Department. She transitioned from male to female in 1991, after 20 years on the job. She has assisted with trainings through the Center for Gender Sanity by sharing her story. Now retired, Michele extends a helping hand to transgender people across the country, especially those in police and fire departments.
